The people that live on Catalina Island do not typically have cars as normally they have no need for one. The town is small and they can walk or take a golf cart to go virtually anywhere. When shopping for things not available in Avalon, the locals take a ferry to Long Beach and then walk or taxi to their destinations. Almost none of them store cars on the mainland. However, the young people can’t afford ferry tickets & don’t have access to cars. A prohibitively expensive taxi ride is needed to go almost anywhere after arrival at the ferry dock. For them, mainland trips to various destinations have been few and far between.

Activities
The Mariners Outreach Foundation’s activities & efforts are currently focused on students attending Avalon Schools. We finance field trips that the schools and the parents cannot otherwise afford. Our funding allows the school age kids to get out to see more and do more, enhancing their lives.
For the students these trips are a special & memorable treat. One would think that living in an island paradise is wonderful. However it is in fact a small enclosed community needing support so these young minds are enriched through attending educational and cultural venues. We hope to do more for other underserved schools and students as our foundation grows.
Some have asked to see the letters we receive from the Avalon High School students we receive regarding their experiences. One of the many letters is attached HERE, and refers to the March, 2013 field trip to the Museum of Tolerance sponsored by the Mariners Outreach Foundation.
