The Mariners Outreach Foundation members are from all walks of life.  As a group able to enjoy the pleasures of boating, we feel very fortunate and wish to give back something worthwhile. The one thing we all have in common is the desire to provide learning and developmental opportunities for young people.  Individually, many of our members have been involved in programs that provide inner city youth ocean related and Catalina Island experiences.

Prior to establishing our organization, some of our founding members became aware of the fact that Catalina Island's students were unable to benefit from the many educational and cultural activities available to students on the mainland. Budget cuts had precluded the island school's ability to transport their students by ferry and bus to and from museums and other educational venues located on the mainland. Because of this need, coupled with our founders' desire to give back to the island they visit and enjoy so often, they decided to form a charitable foundation initially to benefit Catalina's youth by providing funding for educational field trips to the mainland.

As a result, we have grown to incorporate many of the very best educational opportunities available in the Los Angeles region.  Our Current educational field trip list of venues includes the following:

California Science Center          Cabrillo Marine Science Museum       California Science Center
La Brea Tar Pits & Museum       Museum of Tolerance                         Autry Museum of the American West
Jet Propulsion Laboratories       Museum of Latin American Art           Battleship Iowa Museum of WWII
Aquarium of the Pacific              Griffith Observatory                            Annual Visits to Various Local Colleges

Avalon Students at the Griffith Park Observatory

Anyone interested in assisting young people in enhancing their lives is welcome to join the Mariners Outreach Foundation.  Our Flag members provide an annual financial commitment, and may be elected to serve on the Foundation’s board of directors.  Flag members are Board Advisors and may attend the board meetings. All others are Contributing members and contribute a minimum amount each year.  Anyone interested in becoming a member of our Foundation and would like to enjoy the opportunity to provide assistance at either the Flag or Contributing Member level, please contact us by U.S. mail or e mail for a brochure and membership application.

Avalon's Schools' Students at the California Science Center

The enriching experiences the Catalina Island's Avalon Schools' students received since we began providing educational field trips coupled with the Schools' college preparation AVID program has provided amazing results. When we began providing the trips in 2012 only about 15% of the Avalon Schools' students applied to go to college after graduation.  Currently approximately 85% of the graduating classes' students apply and get accepted into various colleges and four year universities.
